What to look out for

  • Check your notice period. It is set out in the terms and conditions and is often one month.
  • Cancel in good time. Many subscriptions renew automatically if you miss the deadline.
  • Keep your proof of posting. With recorded delivery you can show later exactly when you cancelled.
  • Do not cancel the direct debit yourself before the cancellation is confirmed — otherwise you risk missed payments and arrears.

FAQ

Do I have to give a reason?
No. You never have to explain why you are cancelling. The field is optional; if you leave it blank, that line is left out of the letter.
Do I need recorded delivery?
It is not required, but it is sensible. You then have proof that your letter was sent and received — useful if the company does not act on the cancellation.
