An online alternative to International Tracked & Signed
Sending a letter abroad from the UK with tracking and a signature usually means printing it, finding an envelope and queuing at the Post Office for Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed. If your letter is going to one of the 23 countries below, you can do it all online instead: upload a PDF and we print it, put it in an envelope and send it as registered post.
This isn’t a Royal Mail service. Your letter is delivered by the postal service of the destination country. In most countries you can follow it online, and everywhere except Germany the recipient signs for it.
How to send a registered letter abroad online
- Upload your letter as a PDF from your computer or phone.
- Enter your address and the recipient’s, and choose the destination country.
- Tick “Registered” in the postage options and pay securely. You see the price and the expected delivery date before you pay.
- We print your letter, put it in an envelope and post it as registered mail within 24 hours. We email you the tracking number as soon as it’s available.
Registered post to Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain
To these four countries your letter is sent as a domestic registered letter within that country, with tracking. Delivery times are in working days after posting:
- Germany: Deutsche Post Einschreiben Einwurf, usually 1 working day. The letter goes into the recipient’s letterbox and Deutsche Post records the delivery, but there is no signature.
- Switzerland: Swiss Post registered mail, signed for by the recipient, usually 1 working day.
- Belgium: bpost registered mail, signed for by the recipient, usually 1–2 working days.
- Spain: Carta Certificada, signed for by the recipient, usually 3–5 working days.
Registered post to 19 more countries in Europe
To these countries your letter travels as international registered mail and the local post delivers it. The recipient signs for it on delivery. The times below are the usual delivery times in working days after posting.
For letters to Czechia, Monaco, Norway and Romania, the local post doesn’t report delivery back, so you can’t track them online.

Registered post within the UK?
We don’t offer registered post, Signed For or Special Delivery to UK addresses at the moment. If a letter within the UK needs proof of delivery, send it by Royal Mail Signed For or Special Delivery at the Post Office.
You can still send ordinary letters within the UK online with us, by Royal Mail 1st or 2nd Class, without tracking.

How do I send a registered letter abroad online?

What proof of delivery do I get?
Once the postal service has scanned your letter, we email you the tracking number. With it you can see on the postal service’s website when your letter was delivered and, in most countries, the signature too. For letters to Czechia, Monaco, Norway and Romania, the local post doesn’t report delivery back, so you can’t track them online. Can’t find what you need? Email us and we’ll ask the postal service.
Does the recipient have to sign for it?
Yes, everywhere except Germany. There your letter goes as a Deutsche Post Einschreiben Einwurf: it’s put through the recipient’s letterbox and Deutsche Post records the delivery, so nobody has to be at home, but nobody signs either. In the other 22 countries the recipient signs for the letter on delivery. The postage options show this before you pay.
Which countries can I send registered post to?
To 23 countries: Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Registered post isn’t available within the UK, to Austria or Luxembourg, or to countries that aren’t on this list.
Can I send a letter by recorded delivery or Signed For within the UK?
Not at the moment. We don’t offer registered post, Royal Mail Signed For or Special Delivery to UK addresses. Within the UK we post your letter by Royal Mail 1st or 2nd Class, without tracking. If you need proof of delivery for a UK address, use Signed For or Special Delivery at the Post Office.
How long does registered post abroad take?
Order on a working day before 4pm UK time and we post your letter the same day; after that, or at the weekend, it goes out on the next working day. For Germany, Switzerland and Spain the cut-off is 11am, and letters to Belgium always go out on the next working day. Delivery then depends on the country: usually 1 working day to Germany or Switzerland, 1–2 to Belgium or the Netherlands, 3–5 to France or Spain, and up to 10 to Greece or Romania. You see the expected delivery date before you pay. Delivery is in the hands of the postal service, so we can’t guarantee a delivery date. Have a deadline? Send your letter well in advance.
What happens if the recipient isn’t home?
In Germany it doesn’t matter, because the letter goes into the letterbox. Elsewhere the postal service leaves a notice and the recipient can collect the letter. If they don’t, it’s returned after the postal service’s holding period. It doesn’t come back to you and we can’t forward it; sending it again is a new order.
Is this the same as Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed?
No. International Tracked & Signed is a Royal Mail service, and we don’t sell it. We send your letter as registered post and the postal service in the destination country delivers it: tracked in most countries and signed for everywhere except Germany. We print and post it for you, but only to the 23 countries on this page, not worldwide.
How much does it cost to send a registered letter abroad?
As soon as you’ve uploaded your PDF, chosen the country and ticked “Registered”, you see the price, including printing, envelope and postage. It depends on the destination and the number of pages. There’s no subscription and you don’t need an account.
