Cancel a gym membership

Gyms often ask for cancellation in writing and work with fixed notice periods. A posted letter puts your cancellation date beyond doubt.

Re: Cancellation of membership

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please confirm the cancellation in writing and stop the direct debit after the end date.

Yours faithfully,

What to look out for

  • A rolling monthly membership can usually be cancelled month to month, subject to the notice period in your agreement.
  • If you are still inside a fixed minimum term, the membership normally runs until the end of that term.
  • Moving away, or a long-term injury or illness? Say so in the reason — many gyms will release you early on those grounds.

FAQ

My gym only accepts cancellations in the app. Is that allowed?
A written cancellation by post is valid too. Keep your proof of posting so you can show that you cancelled and when.
Can I stop paying straight away?
No. You owe the fees up to the end date. Only stop the direct debit once the cancellation has been confirmed.
