Re: Notice of resignation

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please confirm my resignation in writing and, after my employment ends, send me my final payslip, a statement of my final pay and a statement of any accrued but untaken holiday.

Yours faithfully,

What to look out for

  • Check the notice period in your contract of employment. If nothing is stated, a statutory minimum notice period applies.
  • Some contracts require notice to run from a particular date, such as the end of a month — check before you set your last day.
  • Ask for accrued but untaken holiday to be paid in your final pay; this letter already does that.
  • Resigning rather than being dismissed or made redundant can affect what you are entitled to afterwards. If that matters to you, take advice from Acas, Citizens Advice or your union first.

FAQ

Do I have to give a reason?
No. You do not have to explain why you are leaving. Leave the comments field blank and that line is left out of the letter.
Why send it by recorded delivery?
It fixes the date on which you gave notice. That determines when your notice period starts and therefore when your employment ends.
