Challenge a traffic fine
For challenging a traffic fine or notice. Quote the notice number and explain as concretely as possible why the fine is wrong.
What to look out for
- Check the deadline printed on the notice and make sure your letter arrives within it. Deadlines for challenges are usually strict.
- Be specific. "I think it is too expensive" is not a ground; "the vehicle had already been sold on that date" is.
- Have evidence, such as a sale receipt, permit or photographs? Say that you can supply it.
- Send by recorded delivery: with a challenge you need to be able to show that you were in time.
FAQ
- How long do I have to challenge a fine?
- That depends on the type of notice, and the deadline is set out on the notice itself. Read it carefully and send your letter well before that date.
- Do I have to pay in the meantime?
- This letter asks for payment to be put on hold. If that is refused, it can be sensible to pay anyway to avoid the amount increasing, and to ask for a refund if your challenge succeeds.
